Chapter 1 Reading Reflection
As a teacher, I want my students to have control in their learning, and I think that’s the goal for every teacher. In this new generation technology is everywhere. Students have access to more technology than ever before. That’s why project-based learning is so effective. The one idea that I thought was very important was “Memorable learning experiences”. I want my students to not only remember what they did in my class but to actually connect with the information. This type of learning is not popular in traditional classrooms. It can be looked at as a way to support traditional techniques. I think that hands-on lessons and projects are more engaging than traditional projects.
On page 20 “Teachers Are Learners, Too” is a chapter about teachers being taught to use this technology-rich idea. This to me seemed like a positive move for all teachers. This comes at a time where teachers are getting graded on test scores. Assessments and projects are usually given to prepare students for standardized testing. If teachers can start to merge some of these ideas I think test scores will start to increase. It would need us to review learning goals, management styles, and how we engage our students. Overall project-based learning is creating students who can work in groups, fix real world problems. I think this is a great approach to teaching, and I hope that I am able to merge these ideas in my classroom one day.
Chapter 1 Reading Reflection
The thought of "less telling and teacher talk" and "more active and engaged learning" is an idea that was mentioned on page 18 as part of The Singapore Ministry of Education. Student's should be doing more hands-on learning rather than sitting there and listening to teacher's talk. Project-based learning is still new for a lot of teachers, which gives them the opportunity to learn with the students. It's important that teacher's make sure they get comfortable with this type of approach and are able to adapt to change. There were many things mentioned in the book on what teacher's should be thinking about/doing as they make the transition. This includes personal learning goals, the way you engage with students, your classroom management style, the physical arrangement of your class, how you think about assessment, how you think about community resources, what you collect and how you communicate with parents. Although it seems like a lot of reevaluating and changing, it may be worth it.
"Engaging in project work helps teachers and students develop new ways of working together and incorporating new ideas." Project work allows for students to learn how to work as a team, investigate their own questions, resolve conflicts and manage deadlines, all which are things that are essential for their success in the future.

chapter 1 reading reflection
One theme that really stood out to me in this chapter
is project based learning and the how it may affect the standard classroom. As the
author points out this type of learning will be viewed as negative because it’s
not the normal classroom environment, although this type of learning is going
to create a new community of learners. The author contends that by creating
this new community our children, they will be prepared to tackle real world complex
and social problems because they are using this project based approach. Others
like Dewey and Montessori have tried implanting these ideas and it has shown to
be effective. Why then is there such resistance to change in the education
community if we know this type of learning is beneficial to student’s growth
and development?
Moving from the traditional approach to the project
based learning does not require teachers to abandon those strategies that have
worked in the past. Instead to build on the previously learned material through
using project based learning these children will be exposed to a wide world of
potential academic improvement that before was not seen. The benefits to
project based learning are vast, children will have a better understanding of
learning since so much of this strategy is hands on, As well as better problem
solving skills. Project based learning is still a relatively new idea but I think
it is one we must consider as future educators with all the unlimited possibilities
for academic improvement that it encompasses.
