Chapter 1 Reading Reflection

As a teacher, I want my students to have control in their learning, and I think that’s the goal for every teacher. In this new generation technology is everywhere. Students have access to more technology than ever before. That’s why project-based learning is so effective. The one idea that I thought was very important was “Memorable learning experiences”.  I want my students to not only remember what they did in my class but to actually connect with the information.  This type of learning is not popular in traditional classrooms. It can be looked at as a way to support traditional techniques. I think that hands-on lessons and projects are more engaging than traditional projects.
On page 20 “Teachers Are Learners, Too” is a chapter about teachers being taught to use this technology-rich idea. This to me seemed like a positive move for all teachers. This comes at a time where teachers are getting graded on test scores.  Assessments and projects are usually given to prepare students for standardized testing.  If teachers can start to merge some of these ideas I think test scores will start to increase. It would need us to review learning goals, management styles, and how we engage our students. Overall project-based learning is creating students who can work in groups, fix real world problems. I think this is a great approach to teaching, and I hope that I am able to merge these ideas in my classroom one day.

  1. I completely agree!!
Giving students a lesson that they can remember forever is such a powerful thing! Project based learning is so effective in so many ways! Implementing this into our curriculum is not only effective but fun for us and our students. This chapter really puts that into perspective and hopefully everyone sees education this way!

  2. I also agree and really enjoyed reading Teachers are Learners, Too. PBL is so important and effective on so many levels and we just need to remember to stay positive and one day all of these new ideas will be the most successful and prepare our students to their best ability.

  3. In Chelsea’s blog, I really like your first sentence, that we need to let students be in control of their own learning. I love this concept even though I realize that much of the content is provided by the teachers I would like students to be in control of their own process. I believe that this project based approach allows students to really own their process and be involved in their learning.
Technology is such a huge component of teaching in the future I agree that showing teachers how to incorporate technology into their classroom will improve student’s grades and learning strategies. Very good points!

  4. I really love that you made I point to talk about memorable learning experiences. It is so important that students remember what they are learning and enjoy what they are doing. With something like PBL it is hard for a student to not be engaged and interactive so I think it's a great way to create memorable learning experiences. It is also a good way for students to be able to implement the technology that they love so much into the classroom!
